Europe’s best car

Europe’s best car to be announced at Geneva Motor Show The shortlist for the 2016 European Car of the Year has been announced – and it’s one of the strongest for many years.

The annual competition, which has seen some mystifying decisions in previous years, started in 1964 and is organised by a consortium of car magazines from across the continent, including the UK’s Autocar.

This year’s nominees are:

1. Audi A4

The latest generation (the fifth) of the German company’s compact executive car is evolutionary rather than revolutionary, but it does a lot of things very well and is jam-packed with the latest automotive technology.

2. BMW 7

Series The new 7 Series is up against the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, so it knows all about challenging good cars. This version has updated engines, some excellent technological features and is likely to win customers from the dominant Merc’s.

3. Jaguar XE

The compact executive segment not only has the fellow nominee Audi A4 but also the BMW 3 Series and then the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, so the XE needs to be very good to make headway. Luckily, it is, hence its place on this list.

4. Mazda MX-5

There’s not much left to say about the MX-5 that hasn’t already been said. This new generation is a cracker: an affordable, fun-to-drive sports car that ups the grin quotient to 11 every time you get behind the wheel. A very worthy nominee.

5. Skoda Superb

Superb by name… Skoda’s large saloon and estate car has an improved design, lots of equipment, is very spacious and practical, and a wide range of engines to suit any customer’s requirements.

6. Vauxhall Astra

A hardy perennial in the UK best-selling car charts, this latest Astra is shorter and lower than the previous generation but rather miraculously has more space inside. Add more efficient engines and it can only increase in popularity.

7. Volvo XC90

We’ve waited a long time for a successor to the Swedish company’s large SUV from 2002, but it was worth the wait. Elegantly stylish inside and out, packed with tech and coolly luxurious, this is a highly desirable car in any country.
